Microsoft Teams up with YOU to deal with A.I. copyright risk

There have been many risks related to Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and copyrights that have been floating in the back of lawyers heads ever since the term A.I. first broke into common usage.

Most recently, though, with the advent and popularity of generative A.I., copyright risk has taken front stage. It has made appearances in everything from musician’s concern about how their songs will be absconded, to head scratching about how professors will be able to tell whether term papers in colleges have been generated with A.I. or are novel work. It has even been at the core of the screenwriter’s strike and Hollywood actors worry about whether their images will live on without their permission.

In short, Generative AI — where a machine uses a large amount of external data to create something that appears novel, whether an email, a website, a book, or an image — is creating a robust environment for lawsuits.

Microoft’s Copilot will lead the way to $10 billion annually for the company

Microsoft, who has had already staked out its place in the burgeoning market for A.I. is now among the first to take on the copyright lawsuit challenge.

Having already purchased a stake in chatGPT and raced to incorporate the technology into its Bing search engine, the company expects A.I. to be its fastest path ever to a $10 Billion business.

Now the company is drawing a line in the sand, saying that it will stand behind its customers if they are sued based on works created with its A.I. models that are accused of copyright infringement.

Like any insurance policy, there are caveats — in this case, you need to have used the practices that Microsoft requires in order for them to stand behind you.

Even so, it’s a gutsy move by the Redmond giant, as it reduces risk for its users as they venture into territories in which they neither fully understand the technology nor the legal implications of using it.
